The Porto Design Biennale is an event that has been fostering debate, welcoming considerations and multiple perspectives, while stimulating interest in Design, promoting new discourses and practices that increase the prospective capacity of the subject to outline innovative solutions to collective problems. Design is a subject, and a verb that conveys action; in this sense, it has been imposing itself as an area of great importance to today's society, with a fundamental role in the creation of new social, political, cultural, and environmental paradigms.
This major event, promoted in collaboration between two municipalities (Porto and Matosinhos), aims to act as a platform for the dialogue between civil society, academia, industry, institutions, and national and international cultural agents. Honouring a commitment to the territory and local identities, and valuing manufacturing and materiality, Porto Design Biennale configures an exercise of thought with a comprehensive spectrum and range, starting from the context and local dynamics to generate conjectures and debate about issues of global influence.
The first edition of Porto Design Biennale mobilised close to 50.000 people over 81 days, with an extensive agenda that featured about 300 projects and 60 events. The 2021 edition, promoted during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrated the resilience and adaptability of the event, bringing together hundreds of people around a diverse and creative programme - under the theme of Alter-Realities and the pertinent epithet Designing the Present. The third edition, scheduled for 2023, promises to remain thought-provoking and challenging, bringing together national and international voices around topics as current as they are ancient and original (in the double meaning of the word). Is there an element more original and essential to life than Water? We seek to build this edition of the Biennale around this natural material.
Despite being concentrated in the limited period of a thorough programme, the set of exhibitions, conferences, workshops and publications that structure the Porto Design Biennale aim to prolong the discussion and thoughts about Design as a subject with imminent prominence and influence in the collective life and environmental survival.
The theme is crucial to our present; and, above all, it leaves us uneasy about the future. As a space for celebration, positive affirmation, and transversal expansion of Design (in a society that seeks to be inclusive and sustainable), Porto Design Biennale has the tools (and takes on the commitment) to generate responses to the complex challenges of society, working continuously to shape more sustainable, equitable, free, and happy futures.
The Porto Design Biennale will welcome Spain as the guest country, and work in a close relationship with the territory and industry of Galicia.
